WA 2014 Exclusion Amount

Posted Tuesday, June 10, 2014 by John S. Palmer

The Washington estate tax exclusion amount for decedents dying in 2014 is $2,012,000. However, the threshold for filing a tax return remains $2 million.

The slight increase in the exclusion amount is due to legislation signed into law last year, amending RCW 83.100.020 by requiring that, starting in 2014, the exclusion amount is to be adjusted annually for inflation, based on the percentage by which the October consumer price index for the Seattle-Tacoma-Bremerton metropolitan area exceeds the October 2012 CPI; however no adjustment will be made “if the adjustment would result in the same or a lesser applicable exclusion amount than the applicable exclusion amount for the immediately preceding calendar year.”
